The simply beautiful voice that graced X Factor’s stage in 2011 graced Oxford’s O2 stage this weekend and proved to be not only a worthy contestant of the show, but also of our time.
Singer-songwriter Janet Devlin is back and performing to distinction. Ireland has raised a star who has grown and developed vocally and as a person. Her range is now capable of producing fantastic notes, high and low and her personality less timid. The best part however is Janet’s voice, remaining ‘cute’ and reflecting that of her first televised performance. She had me saying ‘aw’ a lot during her performance.
Showing off her latest tracks from her upcoming album ‘Hide and Seek’ Janet reveals her emotional connections with each song. Sometimes introducing it with reasoning for the lyrics, other times it was just obvious in her face how much a song truly means to her. This was, for me, what made the performance feel real. I’ve seen so many vocalists sing their songs as though it meant nothing to them at the point of writing, but not Janet. She visually bonds with every song and we know that music is what she lives for.
Janet has released some fantastic tracks on her album and treated us to them all on her tour which is still happening around the UK. (See her website for details and tickets; www.janetdevlin.com). Each of her songs have successful music composition harmonising with Janet’s soft voice. Favourites for me were ‘Creatures of the Night’, ‘Hide and Seek’ and ‘Working for the Man’. They each have a very catchy flare and made Janet loveable as an artist.
Overall, I was very impressed as the show was not at all what I was expecting. The band also deserves a lot of praise for their skill.
The best part of the night was getting to meet Janet after the show and having my photo taken alongside her!!
Has anyone in the music scene impressed or surprised you recently?
